How Hiking Actually Changes Our Brains

Hiking has many benefits for people of all ages. Most of us are lucky enough to have green spaces nearby, if you have access to the odd hill and possibly even a mountain or two you can access a whole host of benefits.

This article is teeming with research which shows how hiking; boosts brain power improving and preventing memory loss, burns lots of calories and is easy on the joints, improves our problem solving skills as we take a break from technology (…may need to brush up on map reading skills and leave the gps at home for this one!), can reduce anxiety and rumination. Not bad for a walk in the park…

In my practice at The Affinity Centre, Wilmslow I actively encourage clients to look at how they can get away from it all more often and allow their body and mind to reconnect with nature. As a society, we are often encouraged and rewarded for working hard and rarely for relaxing and taking care of ourselves. The balance can quickly get skewed and impact in all sorts of ways on our physical and mental wellbeing.

I’m lucky enough to have some great hilly National Trust places nearby where I can truly escape as well as some amazing Ramblers Association groups where I can enjoy a walk to someplace new. Where will your hiking boots lead you?
